Wait, so cork flooring is back?
It sure is.
Once overshadowed by hardwood floors and vinyl, cork flooring has reclaimed its spot as the eco-friendly and trendy choice for modern homes. But since its original heyday in the 70s, they’ve gotten a serious upgrade. They’re now fade-resistant, water-resistant, and scratch-proof, making them as durable as they are gorgeous.
So, what’s the deal?
Cork tiles are a great choice if you’re looking for something that combines comfort, sustainability, and style. Made from the bark of cork oak trees, cork floors are not only eco-friendly but also incredibly unique. And the best part? Harvesting the cork doesn’t harm the trees, so you can enjoy your beautiful floors knowing you’re making an environmentally conscious choice.
The benefits don’t stop there though. They’re also:
- Cushiony and comfortable
- Naturally insulated to keep your home cosy and quiet
- Durable
- Impact-resistant, due to the natural elasticity
- Hypoallergenic
- Resistant to mould and mildew

But enough about that – how do you clean cork floors?
How to clean and maintain
Daily/weekly cork floor maintenance
To keep your cork floors looking their best, regular maintenance is essential. Start with daily or weekly sweeping or vacuuming using a soft bristle brush attachment to remove dirt and debris. This helps prevent grit from scratching the surface and maintains your floor’s appearance.
For a more thorough weekly cleaning, use a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner designed for cork floors. Make sure the mop is only slightly damp to avoid excess water, which can damage the cork. A mild solution of water and white vinegar can also be used for a natural, effective clean.
Recommended products
Using the right products is important! Opt for pH-neutral or water-based cleaners specifically formulated for cork flooring. You can also use dish soap, but double check that it’s okay to use on your floors! These cleaners are gentle and won’t damage the cork’s finish. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives, which can strip the finish and damage the floor.
Don’t use these!
Certain cleaning products need to be avoided to protect the integrity of your cork floors. Stay away from abrasive cleaners, ammonia-based products, and excessive water – these can all harm the cork.
Also avoid steam mops; the heat and moisture can cause the cork to swell and warp, leading to permanent damage.
Preventative measures
Furniture protection
Pop some felt pads under the legs of chairs, tables, and other heavy pieces. These pads act as a buffer to prevent scratches and dents from everyday movements. Make it a habit to check and replace these pads regularly as they can wear out over time.
It’s all in the shoe
Cork floors can get scratched or dented by high heels and heavy shoes. Consider having a no-shoes policy at home, or at least ban the heels! This will not only protect your floors but also keep them clean – a win-win! It’s a small change, but you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make.
Rugs and mats
Using area rugs and mats in high-traffic areas like entryways, hallways, and in front of sinks can significantly protect your cork floors from dirt, debris, and moisture. Mats help trap dirt and moisture, keeping them from being tracked into your floors. Choose rugs with non-rubber backing to avoid staining or damaging the cork surface.
Extra TLC
Deep cork floor cleaning
Every so often, your cork floors will need a bit more attention than regular cleaning. For a deeper clean, use a damp mop and a cork-specific cleaner. Make sure the mop is well-wrung to avoid excess moisture. This will help remove dirt and grime that regular cleaning might miss.
Stain removal
Accidents happen, and when they do, it’s important to wipe up spills immediately. For most spills, simply blot the area with a soft cloth to soak up as much liquid as possible.
For tougher stains, a mix of mild soap and water can be effective. Gently scrub the area with this solution and then dry with a clean cloth to remove any moisture. It’s quick, but can prevent long-term damage and keep your cork floors looking their best!
Repair and restoration
Minor repairs
Small scratches and dents might happen (like with any flooring!) but they’re usually easy to fix. For minor scratches, you can use a wax or wood filler specifically designed for cork. Apply the filler according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then gently buff the area to blend it with the surrounding floor. This helps to smooth out imperfections and restore the floor’s appearance.
Professional restoration
If your cork floors have seen better days and require something a bit more extensive than some floor cleaner or filler, consider professional refinishing. Experts can sand down the surface and apply a new finish, restoring the floor’s original beauty and extending its lifespan. This process not only rejuvenates the look of your cork floors but also adds an extra layer of protection, making them more durable and resilient.
