Choosing timber flooring is an exciting step in any renovation or new build — but with so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where flooring samples come in.
If you’re wondering how to use flooring samples to make the right decision, you’re in the right place. Samples let you see how your chosen finishes look and feel in your own space — with your lighting, paint colours, cabinetry, and more.
Used properly, they’re a simple but powerful tool to help you create a cohesive, beautiful interior with confidence. Let’s break down how to get the most out of them.
Start with the right flooring samples
Before you start laying samples out across the floor, it’s important to choose the right ones to begin with. Think about the overall look and feel you’re going for — light and airy, rich and moody, soft and coastal? That vision should guide the tones, finishes, and textures you order.
Rather than grabbing a handful at random, narrow it down to a curated selection of 3 to 5 favourites. Consider the size of your space, how much natural light it gets, and how the flooring will need to perform day-to-day — especially in high-traffic areas.
At Kustom Timber, our range of engineered timber flooring samples is designed to give you a true sense of colour, grain detail, and finish. Each sample is crafted to help you see how your short list will translate into real life.
Choosing the right timber flooring samples upfront means less overwhelm — and a much easier decision when it comes time to commit.
Create your flat lay
Now for the fun part. Once you’ve got your flooring samples in hand, it’s time to create a flat lay — a simple yet powerful way to visualise how your finishes will come together in real life.
Start by gathering all your key interior elements: timber flooring samples, paint swatches, cabinetry finishes, tiles, tapware, fabrics, and even inspiration pieces like artwork or décor. Lay everything out on a board or tray so you can move it around and see how it looks in different parts of the home.
A flat lay helps you spot what works and what clashes, so you’re not caught off guard once everything’s installed. Test different combinations, layer textures, and pay attention to how the tones interact. Are they cohesive? Is there enough contrast? Does it feel like you? Keep moving things around until the answers become clear.
Try different pairings, swap out tones, and see how each element holds up in different lighting. Take photos to compare later — sometimes a bit of distance (or a second opinion) is all you need. The goal isn’t perfection on the first go — it’s more about exploration. Keep playing until it clicks.
Test in different lighting and times of day
One of the most common mistakes when using flooring samples? Only looking at them under one type of lighting. Timber tones can shift dramatically depending on the time of day and the type of light — warm, cool, natural, or artificial.
Once you’ve created your flat lay or placed your samples on the floor, move them into different parts of the room. Check them in the morning light, under soft evening lamps, and with overheads on. Notice how some finishes might feel cooler or warmer, brighter or more muted.
This is especially important if your space gets patchy natural light or you’re working with darker or more dramatic tones. Understanding how your timber flooring samples behave in your home’s lighting is key to making a confident, no-regrets decision.
Consider texture, feel, and finish
Once you’ve seen how your samples look in different lighting, it’s time to get hands-on. Timber flooring isn’t just visual — it’s something you’ll walk on, touch, and interact with every day, so the texture and finish matter just as much as the tone.
Take your samples out of the flat lay and place them on the floor. Walk across them barefoot. Run your hand over the surface. Are they smooth and sleek, or textured and brushed? Is the finish matte and understated, or does it have a soft sheen?
These subtle differences can change the entire feel of a room — and how well the flooring fits into your lifestyle. Families, pet owners, and anyone who prefers a low-maintenance surface may find certain finishes more forgiving than others.
Live with your samples for a few days
Choosing flooring isn’t a decision you want to rush — and one of the best ways to feel confident in your choice is to live with your samples for a little while.
Leave them out in the rooms you’re considering for your new floors. Walk past them at different times of day. See how they sit alongside your furniture, your walls, and your daily routine. Some tones might grow on you; others might lose their appeal. That’s all part of the process.
By spending a few days with your timber flooring samples, you’ll start to get a sense of what truly works in your space (not just what looks good on a screen or in a showroom). It’s a simple step, but it can make all the difference in making a choice you’ll love for years to come.
Bonus tips: do’s and don’ts
A few quick tips to help you get the most out of your flooring samples:
DO:
- Test samples in multiple rooms, especially if lighting varies.
- Take photos to compare different combinations.
- Pair samples with key finishes like paint, cabinetry, and fabric swatches.
- Walk on them and get a feel for the texture.
DON’T:
- Judge samples under showroom or overhead lighting only.
- Hold them upright — always lay them flat, just like they’ll be installed.
- Rush the decision. Give yourself time to sit with the options.
