Some renovations begin with a mood board. This one began with the land itself.
Toolern Vale sits where Melbourne’s urban fringe dissolves into open paddocks and wide sky. The original home already carried the warmth and texture of its surroundings. Sandstone walls, earthy tones, and a distinctly Australian character that felt worth preserving.
Twelve months later, it had been.
The brief
The brief was clear: preserve the architectural integrity of the home while bringing it into the present. Retaining the original sandstone and outback character was non-negotiable. It was the reason the home was worth working with in the first place. Everything else was built around that foundation.
Concept D worked closely alongside the builder, draftsman, and clients throughout to make sure every detail was captured.
The design
Drawing from the surrounding landscape, the palette was built around travertine and timber, materials that echo the sandstone exterior and create a seamless connection between inside and out. The design brings together elements of Mid-Century style with a contemporary Australiana twist: warm, grounded, and entirely at home in its setting.
The kitchen island became the project’s showpiece, a hero piece that generates genuine wow moments from anyone who steps into the space.
Concept D came to Kustom Timber mid-project after facing stock challenges with their original flooring supplier. The team found a solution quickly.

The flooring
Habitat’s Calypso in a wide plank format was specified for its natural warmth and its resonance with the landscape the home sits within. The wider boards reduce the number of visual joins, making each room feel more open and the overall space more considered.
