If you’re after a distinctive timber for your home improvement project, or want a hardwood rich in character for your business space, make Bluegum one of your top choices for your new hardwood flooring.

What Is Bluegum Flooring?

Named after its distinctive bluish-grey tones in its bark, the Eucalyptus Saligna, or more commonly referred to as Bluegum, grows along the New South Wales coastline to the forests of southern Queensland. It grows to be quite large, with the largest trees growing up to 60m high.

Unique Hardwood for Unique Interiors

Throughout the years, Sydney Bluegum has become one of the more popular plantation timbers in Australia, and for good reason. With a relatively straight grained timber, and unique tinge to its smooth bark, it’s no surprise that this hardwood’s hard to replicate colour and features have made it a go-to choice for residential and commercial flooring.

Durability For Generations to Come

Bluegum ranks at a high 9.0 on the Janka scale, which means that it’s been tested to be highly resistant to dents and scratches that can come from everyday wear. And with a Class 2 durability rating, it’s also versatile enough to be used for both cladding and outdoor applications, which means that if you’re looking for uniformity in your interior and exterior design, Bluegum can be a great choice for consistency and aesthetic. What’s more, Bluegum has also been used historically for joinery and furnishings, which you can consider adding to your interior design for a well-matched, beautifully-coordinated classic style.

Versatile Shades for Both Contemporary and Rustic Spaces

With a wide range of shades from pretty dark pinks, reds, and reddish browns, this straight grained and moderately coarse textured timber has plenty of character to offer. Occasionally you may see gum veins, gum pockets, or worm “squiggle” features that add to its uniqueness and character. Staining and polishing only makes Bluegum look more spectacular, and a lot of designers have considered this timber for its lighter tones, helping to minimise the closed-in feel that deeper toned hardwood flooring can enhance in smaller spaces. What’s more, this beautifully toned timber provides great contrast to other timber such as Jarrah, or darker toned furniture, adding a more modern look which still has a natural feel to it in your interior design. If you’re after a hardwood that’s not only durable and dent-resistant, but also elegant and easy to style throughout the years, there’s no doubt that Bluegum is a great choice for your flooring project.

Sustainably Sourced Timber

And at Kustom Timber, we prioritise environmentally-friendly and sustainable practices when it comes to sourcing our hardwood for our timber flooring solutions. Our Bluegum timber is sourced only from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved options, which means that the forests that we source our timber from, as well as our supply chain, is being managed responsibly. So not only are you getting a beautiful product that’s natural and will last for the many years to come, but you’re also supporting a supply chain for a flooring option that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible for our future generations.
