The Vision

Neill Seeto designed this Moonee Ponds renovation himself, and he wanted the flooring to do the same job the house does: hold two different eras together without pretending they’re one thing. In the original rooms at the front, Highland chevron sets a sharper, more graphic tone. In the 1980s extension at the back, Porto cork takes over. Cork wasn’t the obvious choice for the extension, until you see the timber ceiling.

“The materials selected for the flooring reflect our values and belief system,” Neill says. “Cork was selected to help us feel grounded to nature, and for its insulative and sound-absorbing properties. The chevron lends a touch of formality upon entry, and the warm tones feel like a hug each time we come home.”

The Details

Neill’s one worry was the ducted heating. Vents cut across a chevron. So in the entry hallway we made custom vent covers in the same Highland chevron, flush with the boards. You’d have to be told.
